Dubai is situated in the Middle East, bordering the Gulf of Oman and the Persian Gulf, between Oman and Saudi Arabia. The topography is entirely desert and cooler in eastern mountains. The country is a flat, barren coastal plain merging into rolling sand dunes of vast desert wasteland and mountains in east.

Dubai is the quintessential home of sand, sun and shopping. A century ago, it was a tranquil town whose coral-and-gypsum huts housed Bedouin traders and pearl divers. Today the merchants have gone international and skyscrapers stand alongside the mosques and wind towers of Old Dubai. The audacity of the city's rulers is breathtaking. The Dubai administration extends its capacity in constructing international hotels along the coastline. In addition, they also engage in building vast artificial islands with 120km (74.5mi) of new beachfront to posit its status in the world tourism map. They build up an award-winning international airline in 15 years. Important resources in Dubai are petroleum and natural gas.

Dubai is part of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), which is a union of seven sovereign sheikhdoms, formed when the British withdrew from the Gulf in 1971. It boasts of mountains, beaches, deserts, oasis, camel racing, Bedouin markets and the legendary duty-free shopping of Dubai, all packed in a relatively small area.

Dubai

There are two sides of Dubai to explore - the sleek, futuristic world of mirrored skylines, chilled-air malls and James Bond-style artificial islands; and old Dubai, perhaps most clearly represented by its ancient mosques and countless souks, all of which sell a different specialty. Built in 1896, the Sheikh Saeed al-Maktoum House was once the home of the ruling Al-Maktoum family. It was built using traditional methods, from coral coated with lime and plaster. Inside there's an interesting exhibition of photographs showing how little time it took for Dubai to develop from a little fishing and pearling town to a wealthy, modernized oil city.

Abu Dhabi

Everything in Abu Dhabi is modern, sleek and shiny. The United Arab Emirate's capital is often accused of being a rather soulless place, but that's going a bit too far: it's not exactly buzzing, and it may have more sheen than atmosphere, but it does have its attractions. Al-Hosn Palace, commonly known as the Old Fort or the White Fort, was built in the late 19th century, making it the oldest building in town. In fact it's one of the few buildings in Abu Dhabi that's more than 30 years old. At the eastern end of the Corniche, near the port, lies Abu Dhabi's fish market and small dhow (boat) wharf. It's not as exciting as Dubai's waterfront, but it does offer good local color and an excellent reminiscence of the city.
