The Republic of Indonesia is the world's largest archipelagic state. It comprises of 17,508 islands out of which only 6,000, scattered over both sides of the equator, are inhabited. The name Indonesia is derived from the Latin word "Indus", meaning "India", and the Greek word "nesos", meaning "island". With a population of over 234 million people, it is the world's fourth most populous country. It also is the most populous Muslim-majority nation, although officially it is not an Islamic state. Administratively, Indonesia consists of 33 provinces having its own political legislature and governor. There are around 300 such groups, each with cultural differences developed over centuries; influenced by Arabic, Chinese, Malay, and European sources. The Hindu culture and mythology has significant influence on the culture of Indonesia. The most dominant influences on Indonesian architecture have traditionally been Indian. The most popular sports in Indonesia are badminton and football; Liga Indonesia is the country's premier football club league.

Popular active volcanoes are the Mount Bromo in the East Java province and the upturned boat shaped Tangkuban Perahu on the outskirts of Bandung.
Cultural tourism is another attraction of Indonesia.
