Laos
An inland nation in Southeast Asia occupying the northwest portion of the Indochinese peninsula, Laos is surrounded by China, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, and Burma. It is twice the size of Pennsylvania. The country is mountainous, especially in the north, where peaks rise above 9,000 ft (2,800 m). Dense forests cover the northern and eastern areas. The Mekong River, which forms the boundary with Burma and Thailand, flows through the country for 932 mi (1,500 km) of its course.

Luang Prabang
Laos' northern capital, Luang Prabang is a temple town of unspeakable beauty. Somnambulant and languid, the peaceful feel of Luang Prabang masks a fascinating history of conquest and recapture, and only hints at the intricate culture and complex traditions that take place here every day. Set at the confluence of the Mekong and Khan Rivers, with its tree-lined banks, many temple roofs and the rising peak of Mt Phousi, Luang Prabang has for centuries enchanted those who arrive by boat -- still probably one of the best ways to arrive.
The former royal capital of Laos, Luang Prabang sits on a long thin spit of land littered with dozens of wats, colonial buildings and trading houses. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995, the town was described as “an outstanding example of the fusion of traditional architecture and Lao urban structures with those built by the European colonial authorities in the 19th and 20th centuries. Its unique, remarkably well-preserved townscape illustrates a key stage in the blending of these two distinct cultural traditions.”
With a striking range of restaurants, guesthouses and hotels, a stunningly beautiful location and super friendly people, Luang Prabang has a frequent habit of putting paid to tightly planned itineraries -- be sure to allow at least a few days to really take this wonderful town in. Increasingly popular as a base for exploring the surrounds, the town is an equally good spot to just sit by the river and watch life slide by.
Vientiane
The small and relaxed Lao capital of Vientiane sits on the northern bank of the Mekong River facing across to the even sleepier Thai town of Sri Chiang Mai. For many visitors, Vientiane is the first taste of Lao food, culture and hospitality and on all counts it does not disappoint any of its visitors.
Weather
The climate throughout Laos is monsoonal. There are three distinct seasons with some variations between north and south. In general, it is wet between May and October and dry between November and April.
